Renew Portuguese Pport???? HELP?

I need to renew my portuguese paport asap!..it expired 1 yr ago i also have my ID & that hasent expired ...i have double nationality...born i venezuela but my dad is portuguese thats how i am half portugese as well.....I used to live in Venezuela & now i moved to the U.S. The consulates here are far away from where i live and i can't travel there because i have no family members around and im here on a student Visa. The only chance i have to renew my pport is visiting my cousin in Barcelona, Spain but she called the consulate there and they told her i can't renew my pport there only because i travel under tourist visit!!! ( that sounded pretty lameee!!!) they also mentioned i can only renew my pport where i registered the first time (that was in venezuela) ....i was thinking i can maybe go to portugal & renew it there? i should have these kind of problem!....please help! and give me your logical opinion! thanks!!!
