Why is my cat meowing at the fireplace?

My cat is 4 years old. For the past few months, he's been going up to the fireplace meowing and crying at it. I can't find any reason, the only thing inside it is some wood. There is a screen keeping him from getting inside, but other than that, there doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. Can anyone help me out?
